Challenge

Our client was facing a challenge with their previous 3PL provider not meeting the agreed-upon key performance indicators in one of their 24/7 production sites. The site struggled with several problems, including poor asset utilization, high damage rates, low inventory accuracy, high employee turnover, and avoidable penalty costs. They needed to replace the struggling provider with a reliable partner who could coordinate inbound raw materials and outbound finished goods movements while also building a positive workplace culture.

Solutions

Hiring, Training, Retention, and Safety

WSI focused on hiring, training, retention, and safety by staffing the site with 101 newly trained hourly employees and 10 salaried leaders spread across four rotating teams. The site leadership team, led by Facility Manager Carey White, provided positive recognition, clear expectations, and purpose. By holding teams and people accountable, the site went on a two-year run without a recordable accident and significantly lowered the employee turnover rate.

Relationship Building

The WSI team built relationships with the client’s stakeholders by creating clear escalation processes.

“As challenges or opportunities surfaced,” says White, “We demonstrated partnership and capability by problem-solving these concerns, identifying and containing root causes, and mitigating those to prevent reoccurrence.”

We had a daily presence in the client’s meeting structure, which made it easier to provide real-time information on wins, challenges, and support requests, resulting in consistent improvement in results over time.

Results

WSI’s “One Team, One Goal” vision led to a rapid improvement in leadership, culture, and results. The new WSI-managed site was recognized as the most improved production site at the client’s annual conference for 3PL partners. Performance metrics trended in a positive direction, including a reduced product damage during delivery, Load Ready Time Conformance (LRTC) above 98% for months at a time, and an immediate improvement in asset service by minimizing downtime due to asset delivery and retrieval.

Partnering with WSI provided the following benefits for the client:

  • Improved partnership
  • Positive workplace culture
  • Increased asset utilization
  • Higher inventory accuracy
  • Reduced penalty costs
